Land of the Lustrous – a manga (almost) without genders

The manga The Land of the Lustrous depicts the fight of a group of living jewels against the Lunarians — invaders who appear out of the sky and kidnap the jewels to turn them into jewellery. Notably, with just a few exceptions, most of the characters in this manga are genderless.

While this is linguistically quite straightforward in Japanese, it creates sizable challenges for German translation, including when it comes to choosing pronouns. Translator Dr. Verena Maser provides us with insight into her work on this series.
