My main project is the Mäcke Häring series, a detective story that takes place in 1920s Berlin. The first volume was published nine years ago, when the 20s weren’t in the public limelight as much. I was sorry to see that my home city of Berlin had so many taboos and wounds. I wanted to shine a light on them.

Comics are the perfect box of tricks for producing the right backdrop: with just paper and a pencil, you can create entire worlds.

  • Production design assistant at GDR Television (1983-1986)
  • Training as a comic artist and employee of the comic magazine Mosaik (1986-1987, 1995-1997)
  • Animator at Hahn-Film, for “Asterix in Amerika” among other projects (1992-1994)
  • Occasional work as a bartender
  • Freelance artist & graphic designer (since 1998)
  • Various works for the Maritime Museum Peenemünde
  • Storyboarding for Dickes Film
  • Illustrations for the New York-based magazine Communications of the ACM (1998-2004)
  • Drew Abrafaxe one-pagers für the Berliner Kurier (2005-2010)
  • Since 2001, the series “Mäcke-Häring– Eene Kiminaljeschichte aus Berlin”
